ист"Исчезнувшая колония"Английское поселение у побережья Северной Каролины на о. Роанок [ Roanoke Island]. Было основано в 1587 группой из 117 поселенцев во главе с Дж. Уайтом [White, John] при покровительстве сэра Уолтера Роли [Raleigh, Sir Walter]. Когда запасы продовольствия в колонии были на исходе, Уайт отправился за помощью в Англию. Вернувшись в 1591, он обнаружил, что все колонисты исчезли, вместе с ними пропала и его трехлетняя внучка Вирджиния Дэр [Dare, Virginia] - первый ребенок, родившийся у колонистов на американский земле. По одной из версий колонию уничтожили индейцы (на одном из деревьев была обнаружена надпись "кроатан" [ Croatan]), однако никакими данными, позволяющими установить связь между этим племенем и судьбой поселенцев, ученые не располагают.
